The “Real” Story
Students will be engaged in academic learning that will be geared to deal with non- fiction text and the components of non- fiction text such as main idea, sequencing, and text features. In this small group setting, students will engage and explore non-fiction text in order to obtain information and effectively discuss answers and information about these types of stories. Hands-on activities, foldables, and anchor charts will engage your students in this classes and help to better prepare them for reading assessments. Smartboard Smarties Technology in the third grade classroom can provide a rich, entertaining range of learning opportunities that engage young minds and get them excited about all aspects of the curriculum. Your child will use technological tools to enhance his or her understanding of Mathematics and the world around them. Menu Math Students will be interacting and determining correct amounts of money spent or to spend using a set math menu. Each student will have the unique opportunity to interact with other students and money manipulatives to determine how money is used and the different ways to make correct change using multiple manipulatives. Sign Language (Replace) Students will incorporate sign language into their oral and written conversations, deciphering words, and using their knowledge to identify nouns, verbs, pronouns, as well as adjectives in written and sign language form. Learning a second language will also help your student to become a better communicator and more well-rounded individual. Movement Movement class will strengthen students psychomotor learning in a play environment. It will also engage students within an exploration setting to promote health, encourage exercises that will keep a body fit, and educate students in healthy heart living. Math Munchies (Replace) Students explore everything there is to learn about reading and following reciepes, measuring and dividing food, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle with what they eat. Students will create a cooking project during each class with a hands-on activity in which reading, math, and health are combined together for one awesome class! Yoga Why is my child doing Yoga? Shouldn’t they be learning to read or multiply or something? More and more children of all walks of life are becoming overweight, have stress and anger issues, and have attention and learning problems. Scientific research has confirmed that yoga is good for the body, mind and soul. Practicing Yoga postures, your child's bones are aligned and their muscles are strengthened, stretched and relaxed. In turn, blood is oxygenated, helping to tone the nervous system, improve circulation and other bodily functions, promote flexibility and release tension. All of this counteracting the effects of stress. Everything becomes easier - from concentrating and learning, to sleeping, to being less reactive and making better decisions. Yoga helps children and adults to manage emotions and reactions, to focus and concentrate, and to calm and center themselves. Benefits that yoga can provide for your child’s body and education: ● Encourages motor development on both sides of the body ● Relaxes the body, promoting better sleep ● Improves brain power ● Strengthens the immune system ● Increases balance and coordination ● Improves attention and emotional control ● Calms and clears the mind ● Relieves tension and stress ● Increases concentration, focus, and attention span ● Promotes thinking and boosts memory ● Stimulates auditory processing and responsiveness ● Expands imagination and creativity ● Reduces stress and anxiety ● Balances low/high energy levels ● Supports social and emotional learning ● Builds confidence ● Speech delays ● For more information on the benifits of yoga for children and supporting research and articles, visit www.yoga4classrooms.com and www.thekidsyogaresource.com Yoga for children, Lisa Flynn iPads This class will be using technology to help us learn more about each subject in a fun way. Integrating technology and hands-on activities in order to take a new approach to learn reading, math, science, and social studies is our goal! Step into a world where learning these subjects in a different way brings each subject to life! The Morning Hour During our morning hour students are able to complete homework, work on I-Station, iPads, and participant in literacy and math stations in order to jump start their brains for a day full of learning in their regular classrooms. Problem Solving & Energy In this class students will study problem solving and reasoning using hands-on engineering activities. We will be problem solving and building reasoning skills. These activities will include such things as robotics, electrical circuits, constructing structures, brain teasers, and magnetics. This will be an energy action packed hour full of discovery! |
Draw Conclusions
Students will be engaged in academic learning in a small group setting that will focus on drawing conclusions. Students will use what they know (background knowledge) along with what the author tells them in the story, to determine what has happened that wasn’t stated in the story, what might happen, or why something happened in the story. Drawing conclusion will also help the reader to understand characters. All of these are necessary skills needed in order to become an awesome Southside student! Measuring Monkeys Students will participate in hands on activities to develop skills needed to accurately use measurement in everyday situations. They will apply these skills to the measuring of everyday and very unique objects. Music Masters The student will perform, explore and create a variety of music repertoire. We will focus on playing piano, drums, and a variety of rhythm instruments, sing and compose songs. We will create and arrange music with specific guidelines. Measure This Investigations (Replace) One effective way to promote children’s interest in math is to teach them about forensics. Forensics involves the collection and presentation of scientific evidence. Measuring length, perimeter and area are vital in understanding simple ways of life, such as the height for a tent, perimeter for a fence, and the area in which we live in. All these skills can help determine the evidence gathered from a collection of tools or materials are indeed measured through everyday CSI Investigations! Nutsy Number Sense Games This class is all about playing games using anything we can think of to speed up basic number sense! Cards, dice, dominoes, and anything ”gamey” we can think of to improve our number understanding, place value and how to estimate how large a number is , or how close to another number it might be! We will use rounding, addition, subtraction, and number lines to see who can do math the fastest and “funnest” way possible! Beyond Science Come explore with us as we use our critical thinking and logic skills to integrate math and scientific concepts in ways that lead to higher level thinking. Our explorers learn to journal, question and collaborate as we follow in the footsteps of the greatest minds in the world. and Action! Go behind the scenes to learn elementary videography and acting. Our mini-professionals learn scene acting, making and directing videos, and utilizing scenery and costumes. We will study all elements of a story including characters, setting, plot, and solutions to gain a better understanding of what the author is trying to tell us. Students leave knowing "there's no biz like show biz". Math Memories Students will be using math in a real world sense. They will be creating a scrapbook while using measurement and geometric figures. Students will also incorporate a section of writing into each page created. This class will be an enjoyable way to bring math to life while crafting a original scrapbook that the students can cherish for years to come. Expository Explorers Students will actively research, or explore, informational and expository texts. Students use graphic organizers, foldables, and small projects to make inferences, draw conclusions, and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Find that value! In this class, we will be exploring place value and integrating pictographs and bar graphs into our lessons. Place value in an extremely important concept for children to understand. Students will be taught how to find the value of each digit in a number, and be able to break that number down to really understand what it is. We will use hands-on activities and manipulatives to further our knowledge in this skill. We will also create bar graphs and pictographs to display data. Students at this age will begin using a “key” in their pictographs and have to determine the value of each picture in the graph. Students will also learn how to determine values in bar graphs and find missing information. We will be using iPads to incorporate technology into this class as well! Perfectly Poetic This class will be studying poetry and its components. Your child will read numerous poems and even create some of their own. Poetry increases vocabulary and language and your student will have fun while doing it! Healthy Living Join in on all the fun and food! Eating Healthy will include demonstrations and reasons for avoiding certain foods, how to grow and harvest foods, introduction to new foods, how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and best of all . . . taste tests! Manners 101 Students will be introduced to proper manners such as introductions, opening doors, table settings, and table manners. This class will also include a character building component. Student will walk away with a knowledge and understanding about how to conduct themselves in a social setting. Math Maniacs These math maniac’s students will be using real objects, manipulatives, technology, and techniques such as mental math, and estimation and number sense to solve problems arising in everyday life, society and the work place. The students will be solving problems by collecting, organizing, displaying, and interpreting data in several different formats such as pictographs and bars graphs. Reading Detectives The reading detectives’ class will bring excitement into reading. We will look for clues or inferences in various texts. Students will keep a journal of their findings to solve the mysteries of what they think will happen. Bilingual Reading Students will be reading books in Spanish and English working with vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Students will also be able to engage in the AR reading program as well as I-Station during this time. Reading Students will read while searching for the author's purpose. Every story has a reason for being written. Here, we will meet the challenge of discovering the “why” of our stories. We will consider the author's purpose a mystery to be solved. Even if our story is a mystery type- we will have a double mystery! Not only will we read for meaning, information, leisure, and enjoyment, but now we have another ‘purpose of our own’ for the text. |
